Installing a new print surface

James Jan 26, 2017 09:31AM PST

I don't know how the auto-bed level function on the MOD-t detects the build surface, so I'm writing to ask whether it would be okay for me to install another surface on one of my plates for testing purposes. I would like to try Buildtak, PEI, etc.

Will the MOD-t adjust properly to the new print bed height for each of these surfaces?

Hello James,

Thank you for your e-mail. Be advised that we do not recommend the use of different build surfaces as we cannot guarantee the print outcomes. Another concern would be any weight changes from a different print surface. I am sorry if I was unable to give you a definitive answer but I do hope this helps guide your next move.

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to let us know.

Best Regards,

Ha! I just posted this question right behind yours. It makes sense that they would be worried about build plate weight because it changes direction quickly. I may be able to assist, though.

I found an article on here somewhere that said if you wanted to print an object that was just 1 or 2mm taller than the MOD-t would usually accommodate, you can remove the flexible plate, lay some painter's tape on the metal bed, and print from there. It will give you that critical extra space when you need it. Similarly, if you have a scale at home, you can weigh the flex plate and weigh your new surface. If it is equal or less than the flex plate, you should be safe to install it on the metal bed. Based on their other article, the MOD-t will detect the height change with no trouble (I believe it detects the bump, not the material itself).

Hope that helps! And I hope that someone comes to answer my questions.

Happy printing :)
